Commencing a work which has long been deemed necessary by the travelling public: The first step in the duplication of the Parnell Tunnel, Auckland. [1914]

Commencing a work which has long been deemed necessary by the travelling public: The first step in the duplication of the Parnell Tunnel, Auckland. Good progress has been made with the preliminary work in connection with the duplication of the Parnell tunnel. For a long time Auckland people were told that the work was unneccessary, but owing to the increase in railway traffic to and from Auckland, and the danger and inconvenience occasioned by the single line, the authorities have at last recognised that the duplication is necessary. The length of the new tunnel will be 17 chains. It will be sufficiently large to accommodate two tracks, which will be constructed from the Parnell bridge on the one side to Newmarket on the other. The old and new tunnels will run parallel to each other, and will be 40ft apart. The cost of the work in connection with the duplication scheme is estimated at £40,000. The actual tunnelling is to be commenced early this month, and it is believed that the scheme will be completed within a year.
